Job Summary Safety-focused Electric Meter Technician needed to install, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair single-phase, polyphase, transformer-rated, and AMI/smart meters, including net-metering and customer-owned renewable energy interconnections (solar PV, battery storage, wind, etc.). The role performs Blue Stake/811 utility locates and ensures accurate meter billing, code compliance and safety standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Install, program, test, calibrate, repair, and remove electric revenue meters (single-phase, polyphase, transformer-rated, AMI, net-metering).
- Install/wire CTs, PTs, meter sockets, secondary circuits, and revenue-grade Distributed Energy Resources (DER) production/consumption metering.
- Troubleshoot metering inaccuracies, high/low bills, power theft, voltage/power-quality issues, and solar/DER interconnection performance.
- Review DER plans, oversee interconnections, and verify proper wiring, metering, disconnects, and compliance.
- Assist customers/contractors with solar PV, battery storage, wind, EV charging, and other interconnections.
- Perform Blue Stake/811 locates for underground electric facilities.
- Connect/disconnect services, upgrade metering, investigate service issues, and deliver non-payment notices/tags.
- Use field test equipment and software to verify meter accuracy and download data.
- Maintain records, complete work orders, and update AMI/head-end systems.
- Respond to emergencies, outages, and storm restoration.
- Safely work on energized equipment using proper PPE, rubber-glove, or hot-stick techniques.
- Provide clear customer explanations of technical and billing/net-metering issues.
- Comply with OSHA, NESC, NEC, NFPA, utility standards, and interconnection requirements.
- Assist with pole testing, facility mapping, and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license (CDL Class A or B preferred)
- Apprentice Meterman, Apprentice Lineman or Apprentice Electrician with 2+ years of experience
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb, and work outdoors in all weather
- Strong knowledge of AC circuits, electrical theory, meter forms/wiring, transformer-rated metering, and net-metering principles
- Proficient with hand/power tools and electronic test equipment
- Able to interpret Blue Stake/811 tickets and perform locates
- Pass pre-employment drug screen, background check, and DOT physical
- Obtain CPR, Bucket Truck Rescue, and Forklift certifications within 1 year of hire
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- Journeyman Meterman (DOL-certified) or Utah-licensed Journeyman Electrician, Journeyman Lineman,
- 2–4 years of electric metering or equivalent experience
- Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical/Electronic or Renewable Energy Technology
- Experience with AMI systems (Itron, Sensus), solar PV interconnections, and distributed energy resources (DER)
- Training/certifications in IPSA Meter School, NLC Meter School, or other meter program, net-metering or manufacturer courses
- Proven Blue Stake locate experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills (including solar production/consumption issues)
- Strong math skills (ratios, multipliers, demand, net-metering credits)
- Computer proficiency (Windows, metering software, GIS, work-order/811 systems, MS Office)
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA, NESC, NEC, and related codes
- Commitment to safety and accurate utility locating
- Professional customer service and communication
- Willingness to pursue ongoing training and certifications and attend/complete Meter Apprenticeship Program through IPSA
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Regularly lift/carry 50+ lbs, climb ladders/poles, work from heights, bend, kneel, crawl; frequent exposure to all weather, energized equipment, electrical shock hazards, noise, vehicles, insects, and animals. Requires color vision and full range of physical mobility.
